Most of us have a version of the same story: the shop or diner or hardware store you actually like going to, run by someone who lives in your town, knows your name, and cares whether you come back. And then there's the other kind — the place that changes hands, stops trying, and just kind of hangs on until it doesn't.
There's no easy way to tell those apart before you walk in. Do Business Locally is an attempt to fix that in a small, honest way: search your zip code, see what's actually operating there, and read what your neighbors have to say about it.
How it works
The core list comes from public sales tax permit records, so it's grounded in what's actually registered to do business in your area — not a paid directory or a popularity contest.
On top of that, anyone can leave a comment about a business they've been to. We don't do star ratings, because five stars from a stranger doesn't tell you much. What does tell you something is a handful of specific comments from real people in your zip code — and just as tellingly, a business with a track record but no comments at all is its own kind of signal.
Comments are moderated before they go live, so the list stays useful instead of turning into a free-for-all.
Why only Texas so far
Good, structured, statewide business-registration data isn't easy to come by for free, and Texas was the state where it was available in a usable form. If a similar dataset turns up for other states, they'll get added. If you know of one, let us know — or just add a business directly if the one you're looking for isn't listed yet.
Help us build this out
The list is only as good as it is complete. If there's a business you like doing business with, add it — that's how the next person finds it too.
